Sol Mercado explains endgame mistake in Meralco loss: ‘I thought we were down two’
“I thought we were down two.”
That was how Sol Mercado explained his decision to go for a two-point basket instead of a game-tying three-pointer at the end of Meralco’s loss to GlobalPort on Wednesday.
“If I knew that we were down by three, I wouldn’t go for a layup. It was indeed a mental lapse on my part.”
Meralco had no more timeouts before the play, leaving the Bolts players to figure out the game situation for themselves.
The loss, which snapped the Bolts’ two-game winning streak, spoiled the superb shooting of Mercado and Ronjay Buenafe, who scored 30 points apiece.
The Bolts suffered a double black eye as several members of the squad were robbed by thieves who broke into the team’s locker room.
Mercado, however, vowed to bounce back strong in Meralco’s next game.
